How Long Do Late Payments Remain On My Credit Report ?

How long do late payments remain on my credit report? This is the question a lot of people ask but also want to know what effect it will have on their credit report and scores. The little known detail about late payments is the fact that a missed payment is not reported to the credit bureaus until it is more than 30 days late.

So for example, you have a credit card bill due on the 1st of January but you are not able to make that payment until the 24th of January. This type of lateness WILL NOT show on your credit report because it is not more than thirty days late.(continued below) But do keep in mind that the credit card company can raise your interest rate for being late.

Late payments are not reported to the three main bureaus, Equifax, Transunion and Experian until they reach the thirty day or more mark. Once you have an account past the thirty day mark the credit scoring formula will instantly remove points from your credit scores.

For the most part, all types of credit accounts work this way. Car, department store credit, and personal loans follow these guidelines.

The effect of such late payments on your credit score and report will gradually fade off over time. You can expect the negative entry to stay on your credit report for seven years if you do nothing about it and will have an effect on your rating for at least 3-6 months.

Avoid having accounts go into a thirty day late status at all cost…but if you cannot avoid it due to certain circumstances you should simply get caught up as soon as possible and your credit report will reflect the up to date status.

It’s also a good idea to check your credit report periodically to make sure there are no accounts that are reported late to the bureaus mistakenly. The next time someone asks; “how long do late payments remain on my credit report”, refer them to this webpage!
