Original Creditor Method of Verification
After you have followed the step-by-step guide to self credit repair, it’s time to sit back and wait for the bureaus to respond to your dispute. If they send you a letter saying that they have deleted the account after their investigation then congrats! You can move on to the next account.
On the other hand if the account was verified you need to take another step in your repair efforts, which would be to dispute the account with the information furnisher, also known as the original creditor. Remember that when you initially place a dispute with the credit bureaus, they were to get in contact with the creditor for proof that the account was actually valid and accurate.
The creditor was to validate the accuracy of the account to the bureaus by having proper records of the account you are disputing which they claim they do because they verified the debt.
At this point your next step is to request an investigation with the creditor into the method of verification. This allows you to make sure that they have proof and followed the procedures when verifying the account with the credit bureaus.
It is important that you understand that this is your RIGHT under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Here is a sample letter you want to send to the original creditor requesting an investigation into the method of verification of the debt which you are disputing.
XYZ Bank (Creditor Name)
To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Dave Thompson, my current address is 543 Wells rd. Silverspring, MD 21456 and I am writing to you in reference to an account number XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX which was placed on my credit report by your company on December 6th 2007. The credit bureaus informed me that your company verified the account as being accurate.
Please let this letter act as my formal request for you to launch an investigation into the account which is my right under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Once your investigation is complete I would like to receive a copy of the documentation that was used to verify the account with the credit bureaus. I need this documentation due to the fact that I know this account is not accurate and needs to be deleted from my credit reports.
Upon your investigation if you find that there is no supporting evidence of the accuracy of the account, I would like you to please move forward by informing the credit bureaus of your findings so that they can delete the account from my credit reports as soon as possible.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act does allow me to take legal actions if this matter is not resolved as soon as possible.
Thanks for your cooperation and I am looking forward to hearing from you as soon as the investigation is completed.
Sincerely,
Dave Thompson.
Most of the time the account was never properly verified when you initially challenged it with the credit bureaus and the reason you can successfully have negative and inaccurate accounts deleted using this method.
